Art created in art therapy is often less about imagery and symbolism and more about the process of creation. Drawing, painting, molding, sculpting, collaging, etc. can all be used as regulation techniques and accessible coping strategies. Other times, classic art materials are not touched during session and that is okay too! Dialogue, role playing, and imaginative storytelling are just as much of a creative art process as putting a paintbrush to canvas. Most times, art therapy does not result in finished products or creations the client is willing to share. It is the feeling of “getting it out” that stays with them. I love being able to watch my clients grow in their confidence, self-awareness, and personal goals all the while playing and creating in a safe space alongside them.

Often when people talk about art, they get hung up on skill. However, central to my practice is that art is language, experimentation, regulation, play, and an invitation to explore. I may be equipped with the skills and knowledge of the fine arts due to years of interest, commitment and schooling, but that is only so that I may carry the burden of so-called “expertise” and aid my clients in the creation process. Every person that enters my space is their own personal expert. I position myself as a guide so that everyone can feel confident as artists and creatives in the space. I feel as though half of the importance of a therapeutic journey is the trust and foundation of the relationship between participant and provider. I encourage each person or participant to make the therapy sessions their own by following their lead and providing a listening ear. I have experience working with children, teens, and young adults with many different types of neurodivergence as well as medical concerns or chronic illness. I strive for attunement and understanding no matter the sensory needs, communication preferences, or special interests a client brings my way.
